Part 2 of 2 in Holiday Rush

Holiday Rush: 2026 Holiday Shipping Deadlines & Peak Season Charges

A look at when you need to ship and what those shipments will cost during the holiday peak.

Postsale Team5 min read
A man is actively shipping packages. A calendar transparent shipping calendar is overlaid on the image.

It's a familiar holiday shipping problem. A customer orders just before your cutoff, your team gets the package ready, and then something small eats up the time you thought you had.

Now you're choosing between a more expensive shipment and a disappointed customer.

Let's give your team a little more room this year. In our first Holiday Rush post, we talked about getting post-purchase work ready before orders start piling up. This week, we're looking at when you need to ship and what those shipments will cost during the holiday peak.

At Postsale, we're here to help you turn that information into a plan that works for your business. That starts with treating carrier deadlines as the outside edge of your shipping calendar, then setting your own order cutoff dates to fit your workflow.

Good To Know

  • Ground transit varies by route, and Alaska and Hawaii may take longer. The international dates above apply specifically to Canada and Mexico.
  • FedEx One Rate packages are excluded from the listed express demand charges.
  • Ground Economy is contract-only.
  • International shipments have separate charges. FedEx has announced international demand changes effective Sept. 21, including nonstandard-package fees, and says international demand pricing will change during the holiday season.

For Your Planning

  • The Ground Economy row deserves a close look. A service that usually fits your budget may look different once you add the seasonal charge. Compare the full price and arrival estimate before making it your holiday default.
  • Confirm local acceptance times and recheck the carrier schedule before setting your store's cutoffs. For other international destinations, request a transit quote, allow extra time for customs and outlying areas, and check the current export or import charges for your route.

For Your Planning

  • Use the announced rate increases to review your holiday shipping rates, then confirm the final pricing before setting shipping charges.

Give Your Store an Earlier Deadline

The dates above show when a package must enter the carrier's network. Your customer places an order before that happens, sometimes well before it. Picking, packing, personalization, address checks, and pickup schedules all need space on the calendar.

Work backward from the shipment date using your actual processing time, then add a buffer your team can support. For example, if you're planning around a Dec. 17 handoff and need two business days to prepare an order plus one business day of breathing room, Dec. 14 is a starting point for your store cutoff. Add a specific time and time zone, and confirm that the pickup schedule makes the plan workable.

Decide what happens after each cutoff, too. Will you offer a faster service? Who pays the difference? When will you stop offering Christmas arrival altogether? Your store, checkout, promotional emails, and support team should all be working from the same answers.

Review costs with that same care. Seasonal charges sit alongside base rates and other applicable fees, and your account agreement affects what you pay. Price a few representative orders using the services, package sizes, and destinations you actually ship. That gives you something useful to work with when you set shipping charges or decide how much a holiday promotion can absorb.

Put This Into Practice

This week's goal is to build your working shipping calendar and check the costs behind it. Start with your most-used services, choose provisional store cutoffs, and assign someone to update the plan as official schedules arrive.

You don't have to work through the setup alone. Postsale is your partner for what happens after the sale, and we're here to help you put a workflow in place that fits your team. Our Ship Your Orders and Automate Your Shipping guides can help you connect those decisions to getting orders out the door.

Come back next week for the next Holiday Rush post, Stop Creating Every Shipment by Hand Before the Holiday Rush Hits. We'll look at turning repeatable service and package choices into tested shipping rules, so your team has fewer decisions to make on every order.

Let's make those decisions while there's still time to think them through. December will give your team plenty to do.
